Ruthenna Porterfield thought she knew who God was. She learned about him from church pulpits and family traditions. “Live by his standards. Tell him what you want. He’ll give you what you need.”
And, that’s what she did, hoping for a better life. Then God decided to show himself, personally and authentically. What she saw caused her to question everything she knew about him.
At 16 years old, Ruthenna became the primary caregiver for her cancer-stricken grandfather and brain damaged mother who barely remembered her daughter’s name. Dreams shattered. Prayers seemed unanswered. Confusion moved in where confidence once lived. Questions plagued Ruthenna’s mind until one day, she decided to write God a letter. Those two pages in an old homework notebook, were the beginning of a life long relationship. Over time, she fell deeply in love with a God she never imagined.
Today, Ruthenna continues to discover more about who he really is and she wants to share him with the world. This desire is the foundation of her media brand, Hilltop Liberation, providing an experience with God’s love through various forms of media.
As a speaker, she teaches about the one she loves, nationwide at youth and young adult conferences. She currently serves at Faithful Central Bible Church under Bishop Kenneth Ulmer, where she teaches in the high school ministry. As a published author, she candidly shares her story in her book, Liberated From The Hill, as well as on her blog. The story continues on her podcast, Meet My God, with honest conversations about the realities of a relationship with the Creator.
Ruthenna is also an actress known for authentic and passionate performances. She consistently receives glowing reviews appearing in award-winning plays like Clybourne Park and numerous independent films. Through this medium, she is able to study and show the spiritual side of the human condition.
Currently a Los Angeles, California resident, Ruthenna can still be found yelling at her Carolina sports teams on television. Along with the dinner prepared on Saturday, this is a typical Sunday. She remains a proud southern girl with a hint of hood in her roots.
